The Chemistry of Henna & How it Colors Your Hair

Henna is an amazing plant, it is applied for luck as well as for beauty , and its qualities for hair are several. Henna makes your hair softer, shinier, and stronger. It contains a chemical molecule 'Lawsone' that is responsible for the red colour. When henna powder is mixed with a liquid, it releases Lawsone, which penetrates inside the hair and leaves the colouring effect.

Henna Natural Mehndi

When henna is applied to the hair it transfers 'Lawsone' from the henna powder into the matrix of the hair shaft. When we rinse off hair, 'Lawsone' stays behind and immediately reacts with the environment to become carrot brown colour. The exact red colour depends upon other natural pigments present in the hair and also on the current colour of hair.

How to use Henna Powder?

Henna powder is diluted with water/tea brew to form a paste. When the powder comes in contact with water, it releases its red/orange pigment, lawsone. Once you have mixed henna powder with water then let the paste rest in an iron vessel overnight, so that the pigment is released. Wear gloves and apply this paste generously on the hair line by line starting from the roots, then the lengths. After a minimum exposure of 2 hours, rinse it with clean water. Then you can dry and style your hair as you normally do. Don't wash your hair 3 or 4 days after dyeing to avoid any negative consequences.
